Version 2.0 – Blog rebuild

Due to the unexpected loss of my entire subdomain containing my previous WP install, having happened between backups, I must now begin again. Your patience is greatly appreciated.

So it appears that something a bit strange is happening to my blog / server / domain – today I made a slight change to one of my files, and the CSS file had suddenly reverted back to a version used over four days previously, with a great deal less content, which ultimately screwed up my styling for several pages.

Couple this with the fact that I lost my entire Blog installation and sub-domain it was hosted on, (but I can’t be sure I wasn’t over-tired and accidentally deleted it in my delirium…

For now, I’ve used a WP theme I bought from ThemeForest called “Convergence”. I will use this until I can create a custom theme / skin for it for my site, and then eventually my own full design – I just don’t have the time to spend rebuilding the whole theme I had previously. I certainly hope to the Gods that this installation doesn’t go haywire…looking more and more like I’m going to need off-site backup facilities…

Update – 4th Feb 2010 – At the risk of talking too soon, my server seems to have settled down.

I put the craziness down to a number of things, each related to the last:

  1. I was overtired working on my site, and various other ventures, at around 1am – I’m not quite used to that lifestyle just yet.
  2. I use Dreamweaver to style my code – I do NOT use the split or “live” view options – I style all my code by hand. (But what I didn’t know was that working on files via FTP: where there’s one file being saved that’s dependent on another that has not been saved, the secondary file (ie. css) will revert back to its previously saved state in some instances.)
  3. I was rushing around between two jobs – my own, and a fairly bulky one for a client. (I had issues there too, but that had to do with Serverside Includes (SSI) so we won’t go into that…)

All-in-all, for now, we seem to be going ok. I’ve got WP doing a regular backup thanks to an awesome plugin called Wordpress Database Backup, so hopefully nothing will go wrong for a little while.

Update – 15th Feb 2010 – I have now published three blog entries, and have gotten my site structure to a point that I’m happy to move ahead with writing more articles.

Understand that, while these first three articles aren’t really articles but more “ramblings”, you’ll be pleased to know that this can be basically called a “Beta” launch of Sffarlenn.net – I’ll get my article writing skills honed before I try to do anything of value ;)
